On Monday, Manhattan Federal Judge Loretta Preska ordered the release of over 170 names linked to Jeffrey Epstein, the former financier, and convicted sex trafficker, in what is expected to be a blockbuster revelation for those looking to track down those associated with the now-deceased criminal. The list of names, including victims, employees, and others, is expected to be released in court documents in the coming weeks.
Judge Preska ordered the unsealing of the documents in the defamation case brought by Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre against convicted Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell. Giuffre accused Maxwell of defaming her when the Epstein associate claimed that she was lying about being sex trafficked while a teenager by Epstein. Up to this point in time, legal documents have referenced the various individuals as John or Jane Does, as reported by The New York Post. While the case against Maxwell was settled in 2016, media outlets filed to have the names released to the public, according to The Daily Mail.
The judge has given 14 days for an appeal, meaning that the release of documents will likely take place in early January. Some of those named in the court documents, however, will be sparred given the fact that the release of their names may "disclose sensitive information regarding an alleged minor victim of sexual abuse who has not spoken publicly and who has maintained his or her privacy."
The judge explained in her ruling that some of the Does have already been identified via interviews given to the media, and thus, it would justify the release of their identities to the public. Some of those expected to be named include Epstein's housekeeper, who worked on his private island in the Caribbean, an accuser of Prince Andrew, and Epstein's recruiter, Haley Robson. The release is expected to include emails, depositions, legal documents, and other material that has yet to be released to the public since documents first trickled out beginning in 2019.
The release of the documents could be quite a rude awakening for any potential Epstein clients who partook in sex trafficking alongside him. The release will likely also allow for the identification of victims and could lead to even more evidence coming out about who was impacted by Epstein's large-scale sex trafficking operation. Time will tell whether any of the Does come forward to appeal the decision, but they have until the beginning of next year.
