On Monday, Fani Willis received terrible news at the Cobb County courthouse after Judge Henry Thompson ordered the unsealing of Special Prosecutor Nathan Wade's divorce documents after it was revealed that he spent a considerable amount of money to take his lover, Fani Willis, on luxurious vacations after being employed by her office. Wade is currently in legal proceedings to end his marriage via no-fault divorce, and both he and Willis are currently pursuing an indictment against 45th President Donald Trump.
Last week, Nathan Wade's estranged wife, Joycelyn Wade, submitted a document to the Cobb County courthouse showing that the special prosecutor had paid for plane tickets for Fani Willis and himself to San Fransisco and Miami. The submission of the document comes after former Trump aid Michael Roman's lawyer Ashleigh Merchant filed a motion arguing that the duo prosecuting Trump were engaged in a romantic relationship that led to Willis paying him an exorbitant salary to then spend on lavish vacations.
Willis, who was set to sit for a deposition in the divorce proceeding on Tuesday, has not denied that she is currently in an affair with Wade. Instead, she has deemed the corruption accusations against her as racist. "They only attacked one," Willis said last week at Big Bethel AME Church in Atlanta. "First thing they say, 'Oh, she's gonna play the race card now.' But no God, isn't it them that's playing the race card when they only question one?"
On top of claiming the accusations were racist, Willis filed a motion in Fulton County last week to prevent her from being subpoenaed in the divorce case. In her motion, Willis accused Joycelyn Wade of attempting to interfere with the indictment against Trump. In response to this, Joycelyn Wade's attorneys, as reported by Atlanta News First, wrote, "It is regrettable that Ms. Willis has filed such an inflammatory Motion, which has left Defendant with no other choice than to respond forcefully and with supporting evidence in a case that is very personal in nature. The Defendant's sole objective is to lead a peaceful life, and her counsel is committed to ensuring she has adequate means to support herself and defend herself in this litigation. If non-party, Ms. Willis, seeks protection, it appears that the one she needs protection from is herself."
The various motions were settled in the courtroom by Judge Thompson when he ordered the unsealing of the divorce documents. During the hearing, the attorney for the Fulton County district attorney argued that she was too important to be involved in the divorce case amid her indictment against President Trump. The lawyer claimed that her client's affair with Wade is not relevant to the proceeding given that it is a no-fault divorce case, as reported by Julie Kelly. The judge seemed to consider Willis's argument and decided to put a stay on Willis's subpoena in order to hear more from Wade about his personal finances and how much he was getting paid by Willis's office. The next hearing is set for January 31.
While Willis seems to have bought herself more time, the evidence against her seems increasingly damning. The potential corruption that took place between Willis and Wade could lead to legal consequences and the potential unraveling of the case against Trump.
