On Monday, closing arguments in the Hunter Biden gun trial concluded, and the 12-jury panel began their deliberations to determine if the president's son would be found guilty of lying on a federal firearm form in 2018.
The 54-year-old Biden is the first child of a sitting US president to be on trial, and the case against him could lead to significant jail time. Hunter was joined by several members of the Biden family, including First Lady Jill Biden, his wife, Melissa Cohen Biden, his half-sister Ashley Biden, friend Kevin Morris, his aunt Valerie Biden Owens, and President Biden's brother, James Biden.
The president's son has been charged with making false statements on ATF Form 4473 while purchasing his Cobra Colt .38 in October 2018. He has also been charged with possessing a firearm while addicted to an illegal substance. Hunter Biden, who suffered from drug addiction problems during that period, pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
According to Fox News, if Hunter is found guilty of all the charges brought against him, he could face up to 25 years in prison and be made to pay upwards of a $250,000 fine per offense. Hunter's defense team has attempted to argue that he didn't lie on the ATF form because he believed at the time that he was addicted to an illegal substance like cocaine.
President Biden, who has vowed to not pardon his son if he was found guilty, explained in a statement last week that he is "proud" of his son. "I am the President, but I am also a Dad. Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today. Hunter’s resilience in the face of adversity and the strength he has brought to his recovery are inspiring to us," President Biden said in a statement. "A lot of families have loved ones who have overcome addiction and know what we mean. As the President, I don’t and won’t comment on pending federal cases, but as a Dad, I have boundless love for my son, confidence in him, and respect for his strength. Our family has been through a lot together, and Jill and I are going to continue to be there for Hunter and our family with our love and support."
