On Friday, POLITICO reported that former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is considering resigning from office after he was removed by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and seven of his allies earlier this week from the speaker's office.
According to the outlet, McCarthy is considering stepping down from representing California's 20th congressional district before his term ends in early 2025. He has signaled, however, that he would be staying in his post at least until the next speaker is elected by the Republican conference.
McCarthy spoke with the GOP conference after being voted out of office and explained that he wants to "spend time with my family."
“I might have been given a bad break, but I’m still the luckiest man alive,” he told his colleagues in the closed-door meeting.
While McCarthy appears to be downtrodden after being ejected from the speaker's office by his own party, some lawmakers have forwarded his name to retake the gavel.
The “only workable outcome is to restore Kevin McCarthy as Speaker under party rules that respect and enforce the right of the majority party to elect him,” Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA) said in a statement on Thursday. “This depends entirely on several of the dissidents to disenthrall themselves from their decision and to repair the damage before it is too late. I appeal to them to act while there is still time.”
Despite some support from his colleagues, McCarthy has made it clear that he will not be running to get his job back and instead, Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), Rep. Kevin Hern (R-OK), and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) will all be vying for the speaker's gavel next week after the Republicans take a closed-door vote on who should be their next leader.
This is a developing story and will be updated accordingly.

Trump should finish McCarthy's term. He could do the most good for the Republican Party and the Citizens of USA.
