On Friday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) submitted a resolution to vacate Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) after the Louisiana Republican backed a $1.2 trillion omnibus bill that was meant to avoid a partial government shutdown that begins on Saturday.
Punchbowl News' Jake Sherman first reported that Greene filed the resolution on the House floor. Earlier in the morning, the Georgia lawmaker warned that if the vote on the spending package went forward, she would take action against Speaker Johnson given that a majority of Republican lawmakers do not support the legislation. The motion to vacate will bring about yet another fight for the Speaker's gavel after Johnson secured the position only a few months ago following former Speaker Kevin McCarthy's (R-CA) ouster.
"Remember on motion to vacate: MTG has to go to a mic and call up the resolution," Sherman wrote on X. "Then the leadership can delay the vote for two legislative days. That would put this until after recess, two+ weeks from now."
During an appearance on Steve Bannon's 'War Room' podcast on Friday morning, Bannon asked the Georgia Republican if she would lead the effort for a motion to vacate. Greene responded, "We are making that decision on a minute-by-minute basis today, Steve, and I think you can stay tuned."
During a speech on the House floor, Rep. Greene explained, "No Republican in good conscience can vote for the uniparty minibus. This is not a Republican bill. It is a Chuck Schumer, Democrat-controlled bill coming from the 'Republican-controlled' House. The Speaker of the House should not bring it to the floor."
"It is a complete departure from all of our principles, especially if you call yourself pro-life. This bill funds full-term abortion," Green said. "It is the will of our voters, and it is the will of Republicans across the country that this bill should not be brought to the floor. This bill will absolutely destroy our majority, and it will tell every single one of our voters that this majority is a failure. This is the bill that the White House cannot wait to sign into law. This is the bill that rips our border wide open and tells every single person in over 160 countries around the world they can invade our country. They can run over our border control. They can run over our Texas National Guard. They can come in and rape our women, murder our people, and take over our homes."
"This is an atrocious attack on the American people," she added. "The speaker of the House should not bring it to the floor, and this bill should not pass."
