On Thursday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) took to the House floor to introduce a resolution to censure Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) after footage of a speech Omar gave to constituents on January 27 showed the 'Squad' Democrat ensuring her supporters that the Republic of Somaliland would not reach an agreement with Ethiopia.
During the speech, Omar explained to her Minnesota constituents, many of whom are Somalian migrants, that she is Somalian first, Muslim second, and that her primary role in Congress is to protect Somali interests. "For as long as I am in the U.S. Congress, Somalia will never be in danger, its waters will not be stolen by Ethiopia or others," she said in her speech according to translation. "Sleep in comfort, knowing I am here to protect the interests of Somalia from inside the U.S. system."
In response to Omar's speech, a number of Republicans called for her expulsion from Congress, including Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), who wrote, "Expel from Congress, denaturalize and deport!" Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene decided to take action in Congress in response to the comments, writing on X/Twitter, "I just introduced a resolution to censure Ilhan Omar for her treasonous statements that she is serving as a foreign agent for a foreign country."
"Censuring Representative Ilhan Omar of Somalia, I mean of Minnesota. Whereas elected members of Congress take an oath to bear true faith and allegiance to the United States without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion," Greene said on the House floor. Greene went on to explain that Omar's comments "clearly violate" her oath of office and that "by openly admitting her efforts to advance Somalia's interest using her position as a United States representative, Representative Omar has revealed herself to be a foreign agent acting on behalf of a foreign government."
Omar, who fled Somalia during the civil war in 1991, condemned critics of her speech by claiming that the translation was incorrect. "It's not only slanted but completely off, but I wouldn't expect more from these propagandists," she wrote. "I pray for them and for their sanity. No nation state can survive if its states start to get involved in land lease negotiations with other countries without the consent of the federal government. Somalis in Somalia and in the diaspora are united in that effort and I stand in solidarity with them. No amount of harassment and lies will ever change that."
While Omar may claim that the translation is to blame, everyday Americans can see what the Democrat representative means through her actions. Omar should face consequences for her comments, and Congress should take action by censuring her in the least.
