On Thursday, the White House released the official readout from a recent call that President Joe Biden had with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip between the Israeli Defense Forces and the terrorist group Hamas. During the call, Biden emphasized that an "immediate ceasefire" is essential. The president explained that US policy will be determined by Israel's actions to prevent the further deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and demanded that concrete steps be taken to ensure that aid workers are protected.
"President Biden spoke by telephone with Prime Minister Netanyahu. The two leaders discussed the situation in Gaza," the readout begins. "President Biden emphasized that the strikes on humanitarian workers and the overall humanitarian situation are unacceptable. He made clear the need for Israel to announce and implement a series of specific, concrete, and measurable steps to address civilian harm, humanitarian suffering, and the safety of aid workers. He made clear that U.S. policy with respect to Gaza will be determined by our assessment of Israel’s immediate action on these steps."
Earlier this week, seven aid workers with World Central Kitchen were killed in an airstrike by the IDF. The charity, whose aid workers were citizens of Palestine, Poland, Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom, shut down operations following the attack. The Israeli military promised a thorough investigation into the accident.
"He underscored that an immediate ceasefire is essential to stabilize and improve the humanitarian situation and protect innocent civilians, and he urged the Prime Minister to empower his negotiators to conclude a deal without delay to bring the hostages home," the readout continues. "The two leaders also discussed public Iranian threats against Israel and the Israeli people. President Biden made clear that the United States strongly supports Israel in the face of those threats."
This is a developing story and will be updated accordingly.

The call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza has been a top demand for progressive Democrats in recent months, causing significant worry for Biden's reelection chances in November. As reported by the Daily Caller News Foundation, even First Lady Jill Biden has demanded that Biden pressure Israel to end the war, with President Biden revealing to Muslim community leaders on Tuesday that his wife demanded he take action.
