On Monday, Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) formally endorsed 45th President Donald Trump for the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential race.
Mills, a freshman member of Congress, joins other Florida Republicans in his endorsement such as Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), and Byron Donalds (R-FL).
“I think that what’s happening in New York is a very unifying event,” Mills told TIME magazine. “We need to stop the infighting and come together and unify. And I think right now the person that we need to be unifying behind is President Trump.”
The endorsement by Mills comes just days after Rep. Byron Donalds, who was the speaker alternative to Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) back in January, endorsed Trump for the Republican nomination.
As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, Donalds said in a statement that “There is only one leader at this time in our nation’s history who can seize this moment and deliver what we need – to get us back on track, provide strength and resolve, and Make America Great Again.”
“That is why I’m honored to endorse President Donald J. Trump for President in 2024, and I ask my fellow Americans to join me,” he concluded.
With now four of the 20 Republican representatives from Florida endorsing Trump, the battle lines are beginning to be drawn between supporters of Trump and those of Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL).
So far, no Florida lawmakers have endorsed their governor for the presidency, however, DeSantis has received support from outside the state.
Both Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) have formally endorsed DeSantis for the presidency despite the governor not yet announcing a run.
With the Republican primaries set to begin in February 2024, there is still a significant amount of time for lawmakers to decide who they will back for the nomination. Trump, however, is the favorite by far with a significant lead over the Florida governor.
