On Wednesday, independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., announced that he would address the nation on Friday in Phoenix, Arizona, to outline his "path forward" in the presidential race. The event announcement comes after his running mate, Nicole Shanahan, revealed that the campaign is considering either dropping out and endorsing President Donald Trump or staying in and attempting to form a third party that could compete in 2028.
"Independent Presidential Candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will address the nation live on Friday about the present historical moment and his path forward," the event's announcement page reads. The event's location has yet to be determined, but it will begin at 2 PM EST and be live-streamed on social media.
As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, on a recent podcast, RFK, Jr.'s running mate, Nicole Shanahan, revealed that they are looking at either staying in the race to form an independent political party that could compete in 2028 or exit the race and endorse Trump.
"What my gut tells me right now is that I have just got to keep being honest. I have to keep focusing on what matters the most outside of party lines. I need to focus on a vision that goes beyond November, and if that means we stay in... there's there are benefits to staying in. If we get over five percent of the vote, we actually establish ourselves as a party. Seventy-one percent of Americans want a strong third party with a real shot at winning. There are even public funds available if we get over five percent of the vote. I think it's 13.5 million to keep the party going. That's worth something. That means we can position for a real third-party election in 2028 where we don't have to go around and spend tens of millions of dollars on ballot access, which means we can spend all of that time and money on campaigning."
"There are two options that we're looking at, and one is staying in, forming that new party, but we run the risk of a Kamala Harris and [Tim] Waltz presidency because we draw votes from Trump," she said. "Or we walk away right now and join forces with Donald Trump… and we explain to our base why we're making this decision."
Kennedy spoke with President Trump last month following the attempt on Trump's life in Butler, Pennsylvania and he has reportedly offered to Trump his endorsement if he was able to impact policy in a second Trump administration. The Washington Post reported a similar attempt with the Harris campaign by Kennedy earlier this month though Kennedy, Jr. has denied any such discussions.
Kennedy's exit from the race could be a significant turning point that could once again shake up the chaotic race for the White House. The independent candidate's prospects have fallen in recent weeks after President Joe Biden left the presidential race. His exit and subsequent endorsement could be his last chance to shape the race and potentially gain influence in a second Trump administration.
