On Friday, the House of Representatives came together unanimously, 405 to 0, to vote in favor of the bipartisan legislation that increased Secret Service protection for presidential and vice presidential candidates on the campaign trail. The vote comes after 45th President Donald Trump survived two assassination attempts after he was targeted in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13 and at the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida, on September 15.
If passed into law, the legislation, authored by Reps. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) and Mike Lawler (R-NY) would mandate that the Secret Service conduct a thorough and comprehensive review of its practices and standards for protecting presidents, vice presidents, and presidential candidates. The bill was introduced after the first assassination attempt against Trump by 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. The gunman got several shots at President Trump during his rally, resulting in the grazing of his right ear, the death of Trump supporter Corey Comperatore, and the serious injury of two others.
Following the failed assassination attempt, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned in disgrace after failing to answer for the agency's failure during a congressional hearing following the shooting. President Biden directed the Secret Service to provide presidential-level security for President Trump and Vice President Harris; however, that did not prevent another attempt on Trump's life on September 15.
The second attempt made by 58-year-old Ryan Routh, who brought a scoped SKS rifle and ceramic plates, was foiled when the Secret Service confronted the would-be assassin after one of the agents who was scouting the golf course saw the barrel of the weapon pointing out of a chain-link fence that outlined the course's perimeter. Routh fled the scene after agents opened fire about 300 to 500 yards away from Trump. A witness photographed Routh's black Nissan license plate as he fled. The suspect was apprehended by authorities about 50 miles away, traveling north on I-95.
"Regardless of how every American feels, regardless of how every American intends to vote, it is the right of the American people to determine the outcome of this election. The idea that our election could be decided by an assassin's bullet should shake the conscience of our nation, and it requires swift action by the federal government," Congressman Lawler said about the legislation, according to Fox News. "It is shocking that it took a second assassination attempt for Donald Trump to get the same level of protective detail from the Secret Service as the president of the United States."
