On Tuesday, Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY), infamous for being a member of the 'Squad' in Congress and for pulling a fire alarm to delay a spending package earlier last year, was handily defeated by Democratic challenger George Latimer. The closely watched race was a proxy fight between the more moderate, pro-Israel side of the Democrat Party and the progressive, pro-Palestine members of the Squad.
Despite the backing of influential figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Alexandria Ocascio Cortez (D-NY), Bowman, who represents part of the Bronx and Westchester County, was unable to retain his seat. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) played a significant role in the race, investing heavily against Bowman due to his controversial comments following October 7 and the war in Gaza.
The race was called about 35 minutes after the polls closed in New York's 16th district. With 52.7 percent of the vote in, Rep. Bowman was defeated, with Latimer securing 54.5 percent of the vote compared to Bowman's 45.5 percent. Latimer, a Westchester County executive, will now face Miriam Flisser (R-NY), but the district isn't competitive, and his primary win nearly guarantees him a spot in Congress.
