On Thursday afternoon in the hours following the announcement of a ruling that effectively struck down affirmative action in college and university admissions, police evacuated the Supreme Court grounds after a suspicious package was discovered.
The U.S. Capitol Police, who are working in conjunction with the Supreme Court Police to secure the area, tweeted, "We are assisting the Supreme Court Police with a suspicious package. Out of an abundance of caution, we are also helping keep the area clear. We cannot provide further information about another agency’s case, but we will keep the community updated about our involvement."
The agency indicated that Maryland Avenue, First, and East Capitol Streets are closed between First and Second Streets.
Footage posted online by Sam Lisker of Scripps Media showed the scene as journalists and protestors were ordered back by police.
Less than an hour prior to the threat after remarking in sharp disagreement with the Court's ruling, President Joe Biden when asked if the SCOTUS was considered by him a "rogue court", he answered, "This is not a NORMAL Court."
Lisker reported being pushed back twice more as the investigation continued.
Only minutes before the evacuation an unnamed demonstrator was detained by Supreme Court Police after striding onto the steps of the court.
This is a developing story and DC Enquirer will provide further updates as new information becomes available.
