BREAKING: The GOP Candidates Take On School Choice At The Presidential Debate

On Wednesday evening, seven Republican presidential candidates took to the stage at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California for the second GOP presidential debate hosted by Fox News and Univision. The debate started at 6 PM PST.

The candidates taking the stage include Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), former Gov. Nikki Haley (R-SC), businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), former Vice President Mike Pence, former Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ), and Gov. Doug Burgam (R-SD).

After returning from the break, former Gov. Nikki Haley was asked about her failure to get school choice passed in South Carolina to which she explained that kids need to be caught up via reading remediation and complete transparency in the classroom. She then emphasized that school choice needs to come nationwide and education policies need to be returned back to the states.

Christie was then asked a similar question on whether he would aid minorities first. To this, Christie said that the government needs to help all students and that public schools are not run by the public but instead by the teacher unions led by Randi Weingarten. He then said that Jill Biden's influence in the White House is emboldening the teacher unions.

DeSantis was then asked about his education policy in Florida where Kamala Harris attempted to claim that he promoted a curriculum that said that slavery had a redeeming quality. DeSantis refuted that narrative and explained that Florida has the best education system in America.

Sen. Scott took the opportunity to explain that black Americans survived slavery and discrimination, however, it wasn't until the policies of LBJ that led to the black communities demise.

Ramaswamy was then asked about parental rights in education to which Vivek explained that parents have the right to know what is going on in the schools, particularly on the issue of transgenderism. Burgum was then asked the same question where he emphasized that the issue should be handled by the states.

Vice President Pence was then asked about increasing violence against the LGBTQ community where he said that he would stand up for the rights and liberties of every American. Pence then explained that he would pass a total ban on transgender surgeries for minors across the country. He also said that he would empower parents in education.
