On Sunday, leading Republican presidential candidate and 45th President Donald Trump traveled to Edinburg, Texas, to meet with Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) and the men and women of the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas National Guard who are protecting the southern border as a part of Operation Lone Star. During the visit, Gov. Abbott officially endorsed Trump for the Republican nomination, making him the seventh Republican governor to endorse the former president.
"Today, I am proud to endorse Donald J. Trump for President," Abbott wrote on X/Twitter. "Now more than ever, America needs a President who will secure the border and prioritize national security. President Trump is the clear choice to get the job done." Gov. Abbott endorsed Trump for the Republican nomination given his strong record on enforcing America's border with bold policies like the Remain in Mexico policy, the border wall, and other instrumental programs that secured America's southern flank.
Trump endorsed Abbott in 2021 when the Texas governor faced multiple primary challenges from conservative Texans. Trump's nomination led to Abbott winning the party's nomination and defeating former Democrat presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke by double digits. Given Trump's endorsement of Abbott in his re-election to a third term, the governor appears to be returning the favor.
"We need a president who's going to secure the border. We need a president who is going to restore law and order in the United States of America, not letting these criminals run ransack over the stores that you see images of almost nightly. We need a president who's going to restore world peace as opposed to this outbreak of warfare under Joe Biden. We need Donald J. Trump back as our president of the United States of America," Aboot said. "I'm here today to officially proclaim my endorsement for Donald J. Trump to be president of the United States of America again."
