On Thursday, the House Select Committee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government held a hearing on the ‘Twitter Files,’ the bombshell revelations that showcased a mass censorship campaign by government officials on the social media platform.
During the hearing, Democrats on the committee pressured Taibbi to reveal his sources, something that would be against journalistic ethics to do given the potential danger it can bring to said sources.
Rep. Stacey Praskett (D-VI), the ranking member on the committee, went after the journalist repeatedly, saying: “Who was the individual that gave you permission to access the emails?”
“Well the attribution for my story is sources at Twitter and that’s what I am going to refer to,” the journalist explained.
“Did Mr. Musk contact you, Mr. Taibbi?” Praskett demanded to which the Twitter Files journalist said again explained that he was contacted by sources within Twitter.
She then asked the same question to fellow Twitter Files journalist Michael Schellenberger to which he explained that fellow journalist Bari Weiss brought him in on the project.
A similar line of questioning was brought by Rep. Sylvia Garcia (D-TX) which led to the entire hearing going into disarray.
“So you aren’t going to tell us when Musk first approached you?” she asked to which Taibbi responded, “Again congresswoman you are asking a journalist to reveal his sources.”
“Do you consider Mr. Musk to be the direct source of all this?” the Texas Democrat pressed to which the journalist said, “Now you are trying to get me to say that he is the source. I just can’t answer that question.”
“Well, either he is or he isn’t. If you are telling me you can’t answer because it’s your source then the only logical conclusion is that he is, in fact, your source,” she said, adding, “Well sir I just don’t understand you can’t have it both ways.”
Following this line of questioning, the committee devolved into chaos with Ranking Member Praskett and Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) getting into a shouting match about Rep. Garcia’s questions.
“What he has said is he is not going to reveal his source,” Jordan said, adding, “the fact that Democrats are pressuring him to do so is such a violation of the First Amendment.”
