On Friday, YouTube finally restored President Donald J. Trump’s YouTube account after over two years following the account’s suspension following the events of January 6th, 2021.
The channel was restored with YouTube’s vice president of public policy Leslie Miller saying that it “is no longer restricted and the ability to upload new content is restored.”
“We carefully evaluated the continued risk of real-world violence, balancing that with the importance of preserving the opportunity for voters to hear equally from major national candidates in the run-up to an election,” Miller explained, as reported by Axios. “This channel will continue to be subject to our policies, just like any other channel on YouTube.”
Trump’s YouTube channel, which boasts over 2.6 million subscribers, was suspended in January 2021 alongside the deletion of some videos by YouTube that the company deemed to have supposedly incited violence. In addition, they also restricted comments on Trump’s videos.
Following this censorious action, YouTube announced a month later that they would remove the restrictions on the 45th president’s account once they determined that “the risk of violence has decreased.”
Now that restrictions have been removed, Trump will be able to post videos for his 2024 presidential campaign and buy ad space in order to reach the millions of Americans who use YouTube.
The restoration comes after Meta lifted the suspensions on Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts and Elon Musk unsuspended the president’s Twitter.
Now that all of the president’s former social media have been restored, it is anyone’s guess as to whether he will return to them. He has yet to post on any of the platforms from which he was suspended. Instead, he has relied upon his successful social media company Truth Social and Rumble.
If Trump does join back onto these platforms, however, he will likely reach millions of voters that he wouldn’t have otherwise thus boosting his 2024 chances. During his presidency, Trump became famous for his tweets. The entire country waits to see if he will make a return.
