On Thursday evening, Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) spoke with Newsmax to discuss the ongoing fight for the speaker's gavel in the House of Representatives that has seen Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) defeated multiple times as Republican moderates refuse to back the Ohio Republican.
As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, Jordan lost his third speaker vote on Friday morning, with 25 GOP members refusing to support his candidacy. Prior to this point, 22 members voted against him on the second ballot, and 20 voted against him on the first, meaning that Jordan is slowly losing support from the conference.
"We need to put this to rest at this point. We should reunite and rally around Jim Jordan to be the next speaker of the House. I will tell you that it is tough sledding up here on Capitol Hill," Donalds said, adding that a recent meeting with House moderates has not led to significant progress.
"I think coming out of that meeting, there was not the talk of unity," he said. "Jim's got to continue to work the phones and work around the clock to bring this to a close. But I think he can do that, and I'm just ready to vote for him to be speaker so we can get back to work."
Donald then went on to attack Democrats who are seizing the chaos in the Republican conference to their own advantage, with Newsmax showing a clip of MSNBC's Joy Reid explaining that the speakership chaos will prove a strong campaign message for Democrats heading into 2024.
The Florida congressman rejected that notion, however, arguing that "the Democrats and Joe Biden have proven that they are the master of every disaster that is facing America — and the world, for that matter."
He went on to add that when Jordan gets the gavel, "we're going to get back to work very, very fast and expose the disaster that is Joe Biden's presidency."
"We have plenty of material for next year's elections," Donalds explained. "And let me also add that President Trump is going to be on that ballot, and the American people are going to see very clearly that when he was president of the United States, our country was in a much better spot."
"This is an issue among House Republicans. We do need to work through it, and we need to do that quickly, but I don't think that Democrats should be sitting over there celebrating because we are going through this process to figure out who our new leader is going to be," he explained, adding that what is going on in the House is democracy in action.
