During the proceedings of the California Reparations Task Force in Sacramento, tempers ran high with multiple attendees denigrating the United States in extremely direct terms.
According to Breitbart News, during the speaking segment of the meeting regarding the Task Force's recommendation to pay black residents $1.2 million each in "reparations" based upon America's past history of slavery and discrimination one man, Reggie Romanie voiced the view that the astonishing figure of $1.2 million was insufficient.
Fox News reported Romaine's explanation for his view. "This reparations task force, I appreciate y’all. But you all opened up a whole can of worms. I’m going to tell you this. Reparations is about repair. To me, I qualify. I’m going to tell you how you repair this."
He went on to pass judgment on the United States claiming, "First of all America, from the evidence that they gave us, you’re guilty," seeming to forget that everyone who participated in chattel slavery has been dead for decades. He further cited as "evidence" the thoroughly debunked "1619 Project."
What followed was a series of logical fallacies reproduced here in exacting detail, "In 1619 we was eating fool food! You kidnapped us! Put a hate crime on us! That’s the first one. Now you came here with all the other atrocities. When you brought us here, you raped our men, women, and kids. So, therefore, you married us!"
Romaine continued his disjointed statement, "Don’t treat us like no cheap piece of meat!" he declared, apropos of nothing. He then suggested some variant of national divorce:
"So, therefore, our last name’s ‘American!’ So now’s the time for a divorce! What do you get in divorce? You get half the money, half the land, alimony, child support, attorney fees, and everything else! So that’s what we want!" the Californian demanded.
As the man walked off the crowd exploded in applause.
In order for the proposal to bear any weight it must be approved by the state legislature and Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA).
As reported by DC Enquirer in January, recommendations from differing committees in California have ranged from $233,000 per person with the highest so far being recommended by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors Committee, also known as the AARAC or African American Reparations Advisory Committee, which called for "one-time, lump-sum reparations payments of $5 million to each eligible recipient. The amount could cover ‘the economic and opportunity losses that Black San Franciscans have endured, collectively, as the result of both intentional decisions and unintended harms perpetuated by City policy,’" according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
It is historically notable and relevant to the conversation that chattel slavery was never legal in California after it joined the United States in 1850.
While slaves were brought in during the territorial era of California by southern settlers and their bondage persisted illegally after admission in 1850 for several years, the practice of black slavery was all but eradicated by the end of the Civil War and the state firmly found itself to be both pro-Union and anti-slavery.
