On Monday, presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump made his stance on abortion clear with a policy video posted to Truth Social. In the video, Trump states that the issue of abotion should be left to the states and that his actions as a pro-life president allowed for the overturning of Roe v. Wade. The position, which is rooted in federalism, will likely appeal to more moderate voters and be a thorn in the side of radical Democrats who wish to allow abortion up until birth. The Biden campaign made that clear with its response to Trump's statement.
"Donald Trump made it clear once again today that he is - more than anyone in America - the person responsible for ending Roe v. Wade," the Biden campaign said in a statement. "He is - more than anyone in America - responsible for creating the cruelty and the chaos that has enveloped america since the Dobbs decision." The Biden-Harris campaign then went on to claim that abortion is a "fundmental right" that the Supreme Court affirmed from 1973 to 2022.
"I am determined to restore the federal protections of Roe v. Wade. So it won't matter where you live in America: the fundemntal right to choose for women will once again be the law of the land. If you give me and Vice President Harris a Democratic Congress, that is exactly what we will do," the campaign continued, adding that Trump only nominated pro-life justices in his first term to get the support of pro-life groups. "As I have said many times since the Dobbs decision, Donald Trump and all those responsible for overturning Roe don't have a clue about the power of women in America. But they are about to find out."
As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, Trump explained in his statement that he believes that each state's population should determine the extent of abortion allowed by its local government. "Whatever they decide must be the law of the land. In this case, the law of the state. Many states will be different. Many will have a different number of weeks, or some will be more conservative than others, and that's what they will be. At the end of the day, this is all about the will of the people... I am strongly in favor of exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother. You must follow your heart on this issue," he said. "My view is now that we have abortion where everyone wanted it from a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote or legislation, or perhaps both. And whatever they decide must be the law of the land. In this case, the law of the state."
"Many states will be different," Trump continued. "Many will have a different number of weeks, or some will have more conservative than others, and that's what they will be. At the end of the day, this is all about the will of the people. This 50-year battle over Roe v. Wade took it out of the federal hands and brought it into the hearts, minds, and votes of the people of each state, was really something. Now it's up to the states to do the right thing."
