On Monday, MSNBC political commentator Chris Matthews made the utterly untrue claim that mentally declining President Joe Biden possessed “brilliant” world leadership that was akin to past presidents like Franklin D. Roosevelt and Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Matthews was on ‘Morning Joe’ to speak about Finland joining NATO, something Biden has very little to do with. Despite that, the commentator gave massive praise to Biden for his “great job in foreign leadership.”
“Tom Friedman, I guess a couple months ago, said Joe Biden has united NATO as never before, his problem is uniting the United States, that is the challenge. I noticed that Richard Haass said the other day in leaving his post at the Council of Foreign Relations, he said the biggest challenge in the world today is us,” he claimed. “It is so interesting how this whole thing is polarized now. We’re doing a great job in world leadership, brilliant at the level of FDR or Eisenhower. We are holding the world together.”
“We’re building NATO, as it was built to be when it was first formed to stop Russia, to stop Russia’s advancement into Western Europe. And look where we’ve stopped them, at the Ukraine,” the commentator continued. “In Ukraine, that’s where we stopped them, and in the Balkans. It’s extraordinary what Blinken has done and Jake Sullivan has done, and what the president’s done. Altogether, they’re doing a great job.”
“But here at home, and you talked about that earlier this morning, this distinction where people cannot say what you said in your article for The Atlantic, they can’t believe it. They can’t believe it. Which is everything is doing pretty well. We have inflation it’s continued but it’s going down. Everything is going swimmingly,” he attempted to push, despite being the exact opposite.
This “world leadership” that is “at [the] level of FDR or Eisenhower” is something that most Americans have not seen in the president so the only solution is that Matthews is confusing Biden for another man. Somehow the American people are supposed to believe that the same president that, on the same day this segment aired, was stumbling around in England is as smart as Franklin D. Roosevelt?
Perhaps if you took the blunders of the two former presidents, like FDR’s court-packing attempts and Eisenhower giving into the red scare, then we can begin to see similar levels of the current president. But brilliant isn’t just a stretch, it’s a blatant lie that Matthews is more than happy to push to appease his higher-ups.
