'Come Together, Behind One Candidate': Top Florida Republican Turns On DeSantis, Endorses Trump For 2024

On Thursday, Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) officially endorsed leading Republican presidential candidate and 45th President Donald Trump for the Republican nomination, encouraging the GOP to come together behind one candidate to take on President Joe Biden and the Democrat Party next year.

Scott outlined his endorsement in an op-ed in Newsweek that began with a lambasting of Biden's agenda both domestically and abroad as well as a harkening back to Ronald Reagan's 1980 "morning in America' campaign.

He went on to explain that he is optimistic that America can return to become the "undisputed moral leader of the free world" and that President Trump is the right man to lead the country to greatness.

"It's time for the Republican Party to come together, behind one candidate, and declare with one voice that we are united in our efforts to defeat Joe Biden and rescue America," he wrote.

"I know most of the candidates running for president, and I respect their decision to put themselves through this very difficult process," Scott explained. "They've made their case to voters, laid out their agendas and their plans, and told their stories. Make no mistake: every single one of them would be a better president than Joe Biden."

"But Republican voters are making their voices heard loud and clear. They want to return to the leadership of Donald Trump," he added.

"President Trump will be our nominee because America was safer and more prosperous when he led our nation," the Florida Republican explained, adding, "Our economy was booming, and we were achieving energy independence. He took on Communist China and stood up to dictators in Latin America. He did more for Israel than any other president in our history, bringing stability and peace in the Middle East through the Abraham Accords, while Joe Biden is undoing all the work his administration accomplished."

Following Scott's endorsement, Trump took to Truth Social to thank the top Sunshine State Republican, writing, "A great honor to have received such a powerful Endorsement from Senator Rick Scott of Florida. Rick is tough and smart, and he knows what America needs, especially in these troubled (By Biden!) times. Thank you, Rick!"

As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, Scott's endorsement is likely the first shot in the gradual turning of Florida Republicans away from Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and towards the former president. Ahead of the upcoming GOP debate in Miami, a number of Florida state legislators are expected to flip their endorsements from DeSantis to Trump, thus showing the continued eroding of DeSantis' candidacy for the nomination.

According to the Five Thirty Eight polling average, Trump currently has 56.9 percent national support, while Gov. DeSantis has 14.1 percent support, Haley has 8.0 percent support, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy (R-OH) has 5.8 percent support, and Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ) has 3.1 percent support.

Given Trump's continued dominance both nationally and in the early states, Sen. Scott is correct. The GOP should come together and get behind Trump in order to put up a united front against Biden come next year.
