On Thursday, the Senate voted to slap down the proposal from President Joe Biden that would give over $400 billion in student loan debt forgiveness, passing a measure in a 52-46 vote that would block the Biden policy. Two Democrats and one independent voted with Republicans to secure the majority.
The resolution takes advantage of the Congressional Review Act which allows Congress to reject any policy pushed by the executive branch as long as both the House and the Senate pass the resolution disapproving the policy.
The Senate voted on passing the resolution that formally disapproves of the Department of Education rule that implements the Biden administration plan, per Fox News. The House voted last week to ax the program, passing the disapproval resolution by a margin of 218-203.
The Republicans all voted in favor of the resolution, with Sen. John Thune (R-SD) bashing the irrational Biden policy: "It’s something of a slap in the face to Americans who chose more affordable college options or worked their way through school to avoid taking on student loans, or whose parents scrimped and saved to put them through college."
"It’s deeply unfair to ask the many Americans who worked hard to pay off their loans or who never pursued college in the first place to take on the burden of student debt for individuals who took out loans for college or graduate school and agreed to pay them back," the South Dakota senator added.
Unsurprisingly, Democrats widely voted in support of the policy besides the two Democrats that joined the Republicans in the vote.
"I’ve heard from so many people across my state who were so grateful and relieved to have a glimmer of hope finally, to see a light at the end of the tunnel, and now, Republicans want to snuff it out," Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA). "Republicans are willing to do anything and everything to prevent you from living a life without crushing debt. Millions of Americans find themselves unfairly bogged down with massive debt so often through no fault of their own."
Biden is expected to veto, having previously released a statement saying he intended to veto the resolution if it were to pass. In a statement made on May 22nd, the Biden admin said, “This resolution is an unprecedented attempt to undercut our historic economic recovery and would deprive more than 40 million hard-working Americans of much-needed student debt relief.”
“If Congress were to pass H.J. Res. 45, the President would veto it,” the statement finished with.
Regardless of the mentally declining president’s intent to veto the measure, its passing shows the clear lack of support for a far-left policy such as this. Student loan forgiveness is a dangerous idea and a complete waste of taxpayer money.
