Conservative voices weighed in on affirmative action during a spirited debate on this Tuesday’s broadcast of the ‘Dr. Phil Show.’
‘Dr. Phil’ host Phil McGraw began the segment by asking conservative author and host of Epoch Times ‘Counterculture’ Danielle D’Souza Gill if she felt white people could be discriminated against. After all, white people are the majority of America, and the Left argues discrimination requires “power”.
To McGraw’s question, Danielle D’Souza Gill replied, “it is unequivocally possible, it [discrimination against white people] happens all the time, this actually happens, not only in specific instances, but this happens in a systemic way, on our most elite college campuses. And I would also say, this is happening, not just in education, but in the workplace.”
McGraw followed up by asking if the discrimination is justified — after all, minorities have been discriminated against in the past. Danielle D’Souza Gill replied to the question by criticizing affirmative action.
“Affirmative action has been going on for over fifty years, so this has been happening for a long time, and even now, we have actually seen that it has gotten worse in the sense that race relations are so poisonous, and many people on college campuses actually feel like, because of all this that is happening, they feel like they are being pitted against each other,” Danielle D’Souza Gill added.
Building upon this, Daily Wire pundit Candace Owens replied, “the policies are harmful also to the people that they purport to help. And we have all the evidence there to look at. When you artificially place a black American into a school that they do not belong based on their knowledge, it does not mean that they go on to get A’s.”
Owens continued, saying, “in fact, there was a black adjunct professor, you guys have definitely heard of him, Dr. Thomas Sowell, who was teaching at Cornell University, and he found that the majority of the black American students that were there were on academic probation. Now, these students were some of the smartest in the nation, but because they were artificially placed amongst their peers at Cornell University, they were failing on Academic probation. These policies have never helped black Americans.”
During another segment of the show, Danielle D’Souza Gill insinuated that affirmative action poses real problems for bi-racial youth. After all, if someone is both white and Asian, what are they supposed to put on their college admissions form? To this, Candace Owens replied that the student ought to put “black.” Owens stated that her own biracial children would undoubtedly call themselves black on college admissions forms due to the incentives affirmation action has created.
