Even Dave Chapelle has grown disillusioned with the Golden State city, which he once called his second home, with the comic digging into the city’s decay at his Thursday night show in San Francisco.
Chapelle gave a surprise performance at the Masonic Auditorium in San Francisco, and he was not afraid to tackle the problems facing the city. According to a writer for SFGATE who attended the performance, Chapelle was quick to dive into the issue of homelessness that has been plaguing the city. Chapelle supposedly spoke of a story about a homeless man defecating directly in front of a restaurant the comedian was about to go dine at.
Chapelle posed a simple question to the audience of the Thursday evening show, “What the f*ck happened to this place?”
According to a McKinsey study, San Francisco’s homeless population is more chronically homeless than that of the rest of the nation. The number also continues to increase, with over 38,000 homeless people traversing the streets.
Chapelle was happy to dig right into the failures of the city, referring to the city as “half ‘Glee,’ half zombie movie,” adding that the bay city would now “need a Batman!”
The writer of the SFGATE article noted that the only positive thing that Chapelle had to share about the city was meeting Steph Curry as a rookie. Chapelle didn’t focus his entire show on the decrepit state of the Golden Gate City, but it undoubtedly possessed a fair portion of the show's runtime.
Based off of recent events, Chapelle's right. San Francisco has witnessed a notable exodus of major retailers from its downtown areas, as reported by the DC Enquirer. The list of stores exiting the crime-stricken city only continues to grow, and with no change to the city in the pipeline, it will likely only get worse.
Chappelle's show can almost be viewed as a sad one. The comedian was open to speak of the fondness he once possessed for the city, but it has now all but disappeared as San Francisco is just an empty husk of what used to be a bustling California city. The inability to manage crime and a quickly collapsing housing market has reared its fangs upon the city and is finding everyone occupying it in its crossfire.
