The moment wasn't lost on the Republican-led House Oversight Committee which tweeted footage of the interaction, writing "While playing Biden family lawyer, @RepDanGoldman inadvertently prompted IRS Whistleblower Shapley to confirm @POTUS did discuss Chinese business deals with Hunter. Joe Biden continues to DENY having knowledge of his son's shady business dealings. Americans deserve answers."
Goldman asked, " And then you describe a lunch we talked about earlier where Joe Biden came to say hello at the Four Seasons Hotel to a lunch he was having with CEFC executives right? But what you didn't talk about is what Rob Walker said the origination of that lunch was. And you testified that he said to, that Hunter told his Dad according to Rob Walker, 'I may be trying to start a company or try to do something with these guys.' Now let me ask you something: That doesn't sound much like Joe Biden was involved in what ever Hunter Biden was doing with the CEFC if Hunter Biden is telling him that he's trying to do business with them does it?"
Shapley answered, "No, but it does show that he told his father he was trying to do business and that he was talking to his father about the business."
Goldman attempted to defuse the revelation with a non-acknowledgment of it, saying "Well that is true, Hunter Biden does try to do business that's correct," as he threw his hands up in seeming exasperation.
George Washington University legal expert Jonathan Turley offered his expert interpretation of the events via Twitter shortly after.
"Rep. Goldman just tripped the wire on Joe Biden. In trying to grill the whistleblowers to show that there is no evidence that Joe Biden was involved, he elicited an answer that the witnesses established that Joe Biden did discuss business deals of Hunter with the Chinese...Goldman was trying to show that the witnesses did not mention a substantive role of Joe Biden, Shapley immediately noted that it did mean that he came to discuss one of the Hunter's deals. The President continues to deny that fact."
Turley included a reference to a 2021 article on his own blog regarding the emails that launched allegations of Hunter's influence peddling that now seem to stand vindicated. As he wrote then, "It is clear that Hunter Biden was selling access and influence. It appears that Joe Biden was aware of that effort. That is very serious. If these emails are false, this is a major story. If they are true, this is a major scandal."
