Democrat Joe Manchin Is In Hot Water, Likely To Lose Seat To Powerful Republican Contender

On Thursday morning, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), who has consistently saddled the line between aiding Democrats and Republicans in the Senate, got terrible news from his home state.

Sitting Governor Jim Justice (R-WV) announced that he will be running against Manchin for the coveted Senate seat that will be influential in flipping the Senate to the GOP in 2024.

Gov. Justice filed to run for Senate and is expected to make an announcement on Thursday afternoon at a resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

In response to the news, Sen. Manchin said on Thursday, as reported by The Washington Post, that “I am laser-focused on doing the job West Virginians elected me to do — lowering healthcare costs, protecting Social Security and Medicare, shoring up American energy security and getting our fiscal house in order. But make no mistake, I will win any race I enter.”

Manchin has a long and storied career in West Virginia politics as a former member of the state Senate from 1986 to 1996, the former West Virginia Secretary of State from 2001 to 2005, the former governor from 2005 to 2010, and then serving in the U.S. Senate beginning in 2010.

Jim Justice on the other hand only assumed office in 2017 and was actually elected as a Democrat. He switched his party affiliation during a rally with 45th President Donald Trump that same year.

According to the latest polls which can be found at FiveThirtyEight, Joe Manchin is in serious trouble of losing his seat.

The Democrat incumbent is losing by double digits to the sitting governor with recent polls showing Justice up by at most 15 points and at least seven.

This is particularly clear after the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) which Joe Manchin was instrumental in getting passed. In a recent interview, Manchin backtracked on his support for the law after he has seen what President Biden has done with the legislation.

His regret, however, is too little too late and West Virginia voters see right through his attempt to placate them.
