In a speech made on Sunday, Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) blasted the NAACP for issuing a travel advisory for Florida, calling the move “a joke.”
Over the weekend, the NAACP, a liberal civil rights organization, put out the travel advisory citing the number of recent laws and regulations passed by the Sunshine State that restricted children from receiving sex-reassignment procedures and harsher punishments for criminals who possess fentanyl. The organization claimed that DeSantis and his fellow Republican lawmakers are “openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals.”
The organization named several specific examples, such as DeSantis denying the College Board’s Advanced Placement African American Studies course and his fight against critical race theory being pushed in schools.
In its warning for Hispanic visitors, it noted how a law in the state prohibits local governments from providing money to organizations that will provide IDs to people who illegally enter the country. The measure also invalidates foreign driver's licenses and other forms of identification that aren’t American.
The organization also notes the numerous bills passed by the governor and his Republican-led legislature that supposedly restricts homosexuals and transsexuals within the state.
DeSantis was quick to bash the advisory, saying, “What a joke.” He continued, explaining, “We’ll see how effective that is. You know, just remember, during COVID, these people would be on CNN and all this stuff, slamming Florida, saying we were so bad, don't go to Florida, and then they would end up being spotted on the beach somewhere, vacationing in Florida."
Despite all the efforts of the left to attack the state of Florida and its tourism industry, DeSantis noted that Florida is “leading the nation in tourism, and I think we’ve led it for many years in a row now.”
The governor made it clear he had no intent to fight petty squabbles with the hyper-liberal organizations, saying, “I’m not wasting my time on your stunts, OK?”
Tourism has been a massive industry for the state, having over 137.5 million visitors to the Sunshine State last year, per Newsmax. The most recent economic figures are from 2019, showing the state raking in $98.8 billion in revenue from tourism, making it easily one of the largest industries in the state.
DeSantis calling it a stunt is a apt way of calling it what it is. No one will listen to what it says, as there’s nothing in it that isn’t already known. Most of the legislation passed by DeSantis has nothing to do with visitors and is done for residents of the state, making the entire travel warning seem oblivious.
The liberals just want any reason to bash a successful Republican that fights against the woke ideology, and they found a quick and easy way to do so.
