Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) continued his aggressive pushback against the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) by passing three new bills this week.
The governor's office touted the legislation as, “The strongest legislation in the nation to date to counteract the influence of the United States’ greatest economic, strategic, and security threat — the Chinese Communist Party,”
The legislation takes numerous actions to combat the CCP's influence in Florida. Senate Bill 264 bars Chinese entities or affiliates from purchasing farmland in Florida or land near military bases or critical infrastructure.
This issue in particular has been pressing for Republican state governments across the country as other states like Texas and South Dakota have taken similar action.
Gov. DeSantis, however, didn't stop there. Senate Bill 258 stops sensitive data from being stored on servers that might be owned by entities affiliated with the CCP and Senate Bill 846 bars Chinese influence from entering primary and secondary educational institutions.
In a statement, Governor DeSantis touted the necessity of this legislation, writing, “Florida is taking action to stand against the United States’ greatest geopolitical threat — the Chinese Communist Party."
"I’m proud to sign this legislation to stop the purchase of our farmland and land near our military bases and critical infrastructure by Chinese agents, to stop sensitive digital data from being stored in China, and to stop CCP influence in our education system from grade school to grad school," he continued. "We are following through on our commitment to crack down on Communist China.”
In 2019, a Chinese think tank cited DeSantis as among the five most aggressive governors in the U.S. against the CCP, and DeSantis’s fight against the CCP has only grown stronger since then.
“Part of the reason we’re in this predicament is because elites in our own country, for a generation, have sought short term profits over long term U.S. interests,” DeSantis said a press conference, highlighting the advantages the CCP has over the U.S., including the use of their government to create a unfair trading relationship with the U.S. “They thought people were making money, that was good for some, and they didn’t have a long view of how that would work in terms of America’s industrial base here at home, or America’s security abroad.”
Governor DeSantis's latest actions against China build off his work to combat the CCP during the 2021 legislative session. During that session, the Florida legislature passed multiple laws designed to protect the financial and innovation spheres in the state.
