Did Biden Just Snub the UK?— Joe Won’t Go, Will Send Jill Instead to Coronation of King Charles III

Reports posted Tuesday and confirmed by the White House indicate that President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. will not be attending the coronation of King Charles III of the United Kingdom. Instead the 80-year-old Democrat will dispatch his wife, a former educator with little to no diplomatic or foreign policy experience: Dr. Jill Biden.

According to The New York Post, Biden spoke with Charles III in a Tuesday phone call informing the new monarch, himself Seventy-Four, that the first lady “looks forward to attending on behalf of the United States,” citing a White House statement.

In full, the readout of Biden’s call with Charles read,

“President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. spoke today with King Charles III, underscoring the strength of the relationship between our countries and the friendship between our peoples.  The President congratulated the King on his upcoming Coronation and informed him that First Lady Jill Biden looks forward to attending on behalf of the United States.  The President also conveyed his desire to meet with the King in the United Kingdom at a future date.”

Charles will be coronated as the King of Great Britain, Northern Ireland, and the Commonwealth realms in a reportedly grand ceremony with all of the pomp and tradition of the British crown followed by two days of celebration.

According to the Royal family Camila Parker Bowles will be coronated alongside Charles as Queen, replacing her current title as ‘Queen Consort’ on May 6th.,

“The Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort will take place at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6th May, 2023. The Service will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury. As previously announced, the Service will reflect the Monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry.”

The Post noted that the decision of a U.S. President not to attend a coronation is not unheard of. President Dwight D. Eisenhower was unable to attend the coronation of the late-Queen Elizabeth II in June of 1953.

PRINCE HARRY’S NEW MEMOIR PUTS A SPOTLIGHT ON ROYAL FAMILY, DAMAGES REPUTATION

The U.S. was still engaged in the Korean War at that time and Eisenhower opted to instead send a full diplomatic delegation that included former Secretary of State George Marshall; decorated WWII General Omar Bradley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; and even then-California Gov. Earl Warren.

While officials that may accompany the First Lady have not yet been announced, if she should be accompanied by her staff and Secret Service detail alone, this could be interpreted as a serious diplomatic faux pas.

Given the critical and enduring nature of the alliance between the U.S. and the UK, one would expect a substantial delegation of diplomats, living former Presidents, perhaps accompanied by Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken along with prominent military representatives from the Joint Chiefs of Staff to attend in the president’s stead.

Not the First Lady alone.

Should only the First Lady, the U.S. Ambassador to the UK Jane Hartley, and a handful of aides greet the new King and Queen, the “Special Relationship” between the U.S. and our British cousins that has endured since the 19th century could be badly damaged.
