A letter from the Department of Justice that was obtained by NBC News announced it was closing its investigation into Mike Pence, former Vice President under Donald Trump, and that no charges would be pressed.
The investigation was opened after documents marked as classified were found in Mr. Pence's personal home in Indiana. The investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation was opened shortly after similar documents marked as classified were found in an office associated with President Joe Biden in the Penn Biden Center, according to Just the News.
Pence advisers told NBC News that they were not taken by surprise with the decision by the Department of Justice to close the investigation with no charges and that they were pleased by its conclusion.
The conclusion of the probe without charges comes at an opportune time for Mr. Pence. The former vice president is expected to formally annouce his run for the White House next week, according to Just the News. It is speculated that he will annouce on June 7th, his birthday, in Des Moines, Iowa since he scheduled to appear before a CNN town hall later that day.
IT'S 'A FARCE': CONSERVATIVE LAWMAKERS SLAM DEBT DEAL AS GOP DIVIDE DEEPENS
This bit of good news for Pence did not escape the notice of former President Trump, who is the current Republican primary frontrunner for 2024. Mr. Trump took to Truth to comment, "Just announced that they are not going to bring charges against Mike Pence on the document hoax. That’s great, but when am I going to be fully exonerated, I’m at least as innocent as he is. And what about Joe Biden, who is hiding at least 1850 boxes, and some located in Chinatown, DC? When will the witch hunt against 'TRUMP' stop?"
Trump is also being investigated by the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation over a similar issue. Unlike in the case of either Biden or Pence, however, Trump's Florida home was raided by federal agents. Many consider this raid and the probe against him to be politically motivated. Since Trump's only time in politics was when he was president, it ought to be noted that presidents have strong declassification powers as they are the head of the executive branch. Trump has claimed that the documents in his possession were declassified at the time of his departure from the White House in 2021. As noted by ABC News a declassification memo for certain materials was issued the day before his departure.
