Tesla and X CEO Elon Musk slammed Democrats for opposing a recent bill introduced by House Republicans, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would require voters to show "documentary proof of United States citizenship" when they register to vote in federal elections. The legislation is facing stiff opposition from Democrats and the Biden administration, which Musk described as treasonous behavior.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) took to X to outline the benefits of the legislation, explaining that "the SAVE Act will safeguard our elections by ensuring only American citizens vote in federal elections." The Louisiana lawmaker explained that the bill would require state officials to ask about citizenship before providing a voter registration form and require voters to provide documentation to prove their status as citizens. The bill, authored by Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), also allows state election officials access to a federal database that would allow them to remove noncitizens from the voter rolls and confirm citizens who lack the necessary documents.
In response to Johnson's summary, billionaire Elon Musk slammed Democrat efforts to block the legislation. "Those who oppose this are traitors. All Caps: TRAITORS," he said. "What is the penalty for traitors again?" The punishment for treason, as outlined in the Constitution, is execution or imprisonment of at least five years, as reported by Fox Business. Those found guilty of treason are also barred from holding public office.
Despite Musk's comments, House Democrats and the Biden administration have come out against the SAVE Act. "The Administration strongly opposes H.R. 8281, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act. It is already illegal for noncitizens to vote in Federal elections-is is a Federal crime punishable by prison and fines," the White House wrote in a memo. "The alleged justification for this bill is based on easily disproven falsehoods. Additionally, making a false claim of citizenship or unlawfully voting in an election is punishable by removal from the United States and a permanent bar to admission."
House Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA) has reportedly been encouraging her colleagues to vote against the legislation, arguing that the bill would "prevent Americans from registering to vote with their drivers' license alone" and make a passport the "only acceptable standalone form of identification."
Democrat opposition to the legislation proves that Democrats aren't serious about election integrity and are unwilling to do what is necessary to ensure that only American citizens are the ones casting ballots in the upcoming November election.
