YouTuber Tests New Ford Electric Truck and It Fails Miserably: “Abysmally Bad”

A recent video released by “Hoovies Garage,” which has 1.42 million subscribers on YouTube, did a road test of the new Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck. It turned out to be “a complete and total disaster.”

“Are you kidding me? That’s almost 90 miles of range in 30 miles,” Tyler “Hoovie” Hoover exclaimed when the video opened. “Are you serious? That’s nuts. What a joke.”

“This is my new 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck and it is towing my new 1930 Model A pickup truck,” he explained in the opening of the video. “Now I towed with the Model A today quite a distance and it was a complete and total disaster from beginning to end, starting with having to film this video out of order, because it was raining so hard.”

The F-150 Lighting has a standard range battery with a 230-mile range and max tow capacity of 7,700 pounds, however, the vehicle’s advertised stats don’t match up with reality, per Breitbart.

“My plan was to make two trips up today,” Hoover said. “About 32 miles each way, so that’s about 64 times two: 128 miles round trip.”

“I had this thing charged to just over 200 miles when I started my day,” he explained, adding, “so ample margin for error when it comes to range and towing and also considering the fact that the trailer was going up empty two times.”

The vehicle, however, lost significant range just from pulling out of the neighborhood. The quarter of a mile journey depleted three miles of range. The total 32-mile trip led to the vehicle’s battery losing a staggering 68 miles of range.

By the end of the trip, the F-150 Lightning only had 50 miles of range remaining despite taking a 64-mile trip and being charged with 200 miles worth of energy in the battery. That’s an extra depletion of 86 miles.

“So, yeah, that was abysmally bad, and if the future is electric, there has to be some kind of solution for this,” the YouTuber stated. “I have no idea why EVs tow so bad. My guess would be it doesn’t have a normal transmission where there are gears and a car’s in a lower rev range.”

“If a truck towing 3,500 pounds can’t even go 100 miles — that is ridiculously stupid,” he continued. “This truck can’t do normal truck things. You would be stopping every hour to recharge, which would take about 45 minutes a pop, and that is absolutely not practical.”

“The F-150 Lightning is more like a truck that most people use their trucks for,” he concluded, adding, “just to get around A to B, and not really using it to do truck things.”

“They just want something big and comfortable, and it does great at that,” he explained. “but as far as doing truck things, well so far just with towing, not good.”

If electric vehicles continue to be pushed as the future, consumers should expect that they can at least get the job done. As of now, they have yet to meet even the lowest of bars.
