Congresswoman Cori Bush (D-MO) got completely obliterated on Twitter after attempting to use Independence Day to push the far-left idea of reparations, claiming that the day of freedom was a “great day to demand reparations now.”
The St. Louis public servant is not new to making outrageous claims, but her Fourth of July tweet seemed to rub people quite the wrong way. She wrote in her tweet, “The Declaration of Independence was written by enslavers and didn’t recognize Black people as human. Today is a great day to demand Reparations Now.”
The topic of reparations is already intensely hot, with many people pointing out the utter absurdity and impracticality of the idea. However, it seemed that the idea is extra-disliked when it was being pushed by attacking the founders of America on its day of Independence. Replies slamming the congresswoman quickly flooded in.
“Oh my god. You were never a slave. You live in the greatest and freest country in the world, and you’re an elected member of the United States Congress,” one annoyed Twitter user wrote. “No one is oppressing you. You have a huge amount of privilege. A little gratitude to your country for one day couldn’t hurt.”
“You want the wounds of history to stay open and gaping. MLK worked to close them and you just want to slice them wide open all over again. You have an agenda for doing so and it isn't because you care about the past,” another unhappy user wrote.
One reply to her outrageous comment used the tactless idea as a learning lesson on the different tribulations the signers of the Declaration of Independence went through. The tweet highlighted how many of the signers of the document put their lives on the line to establish the country and provide freedom for Americans.
The message from Bush was an absolutely absurd claim, but it's especially so when dragging down the founders on a day meant to celebrate the freedoms they fought for us to have. The argument of holding historical figures to modern moral standards is one rooted in modern liberal ignorance and fails to properly understand how the world changes and progresses.
The son cannot be held liable for the father's sins and especially so when it has been over 150 years since. Reparations are simply a cop-out way for politicians to win the black vote by hanging a dollar bill in front of their faces rather than establishing policies to help them. Perhaps instead of dragging down the founders to push reparations, Bush should use all her free time to come up with ideas that will actually improve the country in the long term.
