Former Democrat State Representative of New Hampshire, Stacie Marie Laughton-- the first openly 'transgender' legislator -- was placed under arrest Thursday on charges of distributing sexually explicit images of children.
The 39-year-old ex-lawmaker is being held on four felony counts, according to Nashua Police Department public information officer Sgt. John Cinelli. Cinelli told Patch that the case came to light when officers were sent to a local facility regarding a juvenile case.
When Laughton resigned from office in December, he wrote to Facebook, "As of today, I’m no longer a state representative, which is very disappointing, but I’m going to come back to it," according to The New Hampshire Union Leader.
He added, “I will be attending mental health court, getting some counseling, and trying to get my life back on track. I’m not perfect. Even in the future I still won’t be perfect but I will be a better version of myself and better able to handle situations that come my way. In two years, the next state election, I will run for state representative again."
According to The Daily Wire, Laughton was initially elected in 2012 to the delight of the LGBTQ+ activist community, only to step down shortly after due to the credit card fraud allegations. He would win office again in November 2022, only to resign again a month later due to the stalking charges.
In a video posted to Facebook after his resignation, he told followers, "I’m alive, I’m safe, I’m well."
He added, “I’m not suicidal, and just trying to get by every day with what I’ve been dealt. I don’t know what the future holds but I do know this — there’s a lot of good opportunities out there for me to serve, and a lot of good opportunities for me to still stay connected with everyone and I plan to do that."
The Union Leader reported that Laughton is being held on preventative detention. He is scheduled to be arraigned at Hillsborough Superior Court-South Friday.
As of this report, he has not released a public statement.

According to the outlet, Laughton, a felon with several prior convictions, was asked to resign in December 2022 after being arrested on several charges of stalking. His previous convictions, which he was able to hide from voters until after the election, stemmed from making bomb threats against the Southern New Hampshire Medical Center of Nashua in February 2015, misuse of the state 911 texting system in 2021, a 2008 credit card fraud charge and falsifying physical evidence charge.“They spoke with reporting parties that indicated Laughton distributed sexually explicit images of children,” he explained. “Detectives from the special investigations division were assigned to further the investigation. They applied for and were granted a warrant for Laughton’s arrest.”
