Following Michigan State University Tragedy, Calls For Campus Carry Ring Out After Shooting

Following the shooting that took place at Michigan State University on Monday night, students and locals from around the area took to mourn the death of three students and the wounding of five others.

As of this report, police are unaware of a motive after the shooter took his own life following the Monday night shooting.

A rallying point following the tragedy was ‘The Rock’ on the East Lansing campus, which has long been a symbol for the school and a rallying point for the campus community.

In order to voice the students’ concerns, painted on the rock was the message ‘How Many More?’ as university attendees laid flowers around the message.

In the early morning hours of February 15th, however, a new message appeared on the rock. While it is unclear who authored the new message, it read ‘Allow Us To Defend Ourselves & Carry On Campus.’

WWMT News reporter Rachel Louise Just reported that “The Rock became a space for students to gather and mourn yesterday. At least from the many students I talked to, this message is not reflective of what they want. A vigil will be held here at 6 PM – expecting this will likely be painted over by that time.”

Michigan State’s policy on firearms on campus is strict with students, faculty, and staff barred from carrying firearms in classrooms, dorms, and other public areas. However, visitors with concealed carry licensees can bring weapons onto campus, as reported by WWMT News.

As college campuses continue to be targeted for potential shootings like the one that occurred on Monday night, college students have every right to defend themselves. College students, who are of adult age, should not have their Second Amendment rights stripped from them once they walk on campus. If an armed student was present to intercept the shooter, perhaps more lives would have been saved.
