Following Tucker Carlson’s January 6th Investigation, House Republicans Take Major Action

On Wednesday, Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) announced that they would be launching a probe into the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack.

As the chair of the House Administration Committee’s subcommittee on oversight, Loudermilk explained that his colleagues and him are currently reviewing the footage thanks to Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) making the over 40,000 hours available to lawmakers.

“We’ve got to get through the documents,” he said, per The Hill. “We need to do some interviews with people. But at some point, we will have some hearings.”

“We need to give a serious, in-depth investigation into what happened that day, which the J6 committee didn’t do,” he continued. “We need to know, where were the security failures … as well as what do we need to do to fix it?”

The Georgia Republican did say that he would be willing to use subpoenas in order to get members of the now-dissolved January 6th Committee to come to testify. Key members of the committee include former Reps. Liz Cheney (R-WY) and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) along with Democrats like Reps. Bennie Thompson (D-MI) and Adam Schiff (D-CA).

“I would hope that you know, they’d just come and talk,” the congressman explained. “This is not going to be a gotcha. This is getting to the truth.”

In addition to establishing the probe, the committee also created a portal so that members of the public can submit tips or insight into what happened that day.

The move to investigate the committee’s actions comes after Fox News host Tucker Carlson aired unseen footage of the Capitol Riots on Monday and Tuesday night leading to mass condemnation from both sides of the aisle.

Since the footage aired, both the White House and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) have declared Carlson to be a “threat to democracy,” however, it would appear that the release of the footage has spurred GOP lawmakers to initiate their own investigations into what occurred that day and how Democrat lawmakers may have twisted key facts.

Nevertheless, this probe is a positive development in order to provide a more nuanced picture of the events of January 6th. It is likely not as black and white as the Democrats wish to portray it.
