Democrat County Commissioner in Blue County Endorses DeSantis

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has been so effective that prominent Democrat and County Commissioner of one of Florida’s most blue counties crossed the political aisle and endorsed his re-election campaign.

David Kerner’s support is all the more surprising given DeSantis’ recent controversial move to send illegal immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard. But the backlash apparently didn’t stop him.

It seems much of Kerner’s support for DeSantis is due to his support for police officers. Kerner harshly criticized DeSantis opponent Charlie Crist, saying, “The governor’s Democratic opponent has already started talking about reallocation, which to me, by the way, is a code word for taking resources away from the men and women that protect us. It’s a code word for defunding the police. Florida is a proud state, one with a deep history.”

Kerner continued, praising DeSantis: “The beauty of our state is represented in the diversity of our environment and the diversity of our people. But no doubt, we are a state on the rise. And I give a lot of credit to our governor for the trajectory of our state.”

This stunning show of across-the-aisle support for a hardline conservative like Ron DeSantis speaks volumes about the Governor’s success. Police funding for law enforcement is a kitchen table issue for many Floridians, particularly when Democrat-run cities are seeing spikes in crime.

Governor Desantis was present when Kerner publicly endorsed him and tweeted out a response:

“In Florida, we support law enforcement, reject the anti-police movement, and focus on justice for victims — not coddling criminals. Democrat and former police officer David Kerner stands for the rule of law. Thankful to receive his endorsement today in West Palm Beach!”
