On Friday, former GOP presidential candidate and Miami Mayor Francis Suarez threw his support behind presumptive GOP nominee and 45th President Donald Trump in a surprise move for the former Biden-supporting mayor.
"After serving both our current President and President Trump at the border, and having been there myself last week, it is evident to me that the only candidate that will keep our country safe, our border secured, reduce inflation, and can coherently lead our country forward is President Donald J. Trump," Suarez said in a statement. "For those reasons, I am endorsing President Trump today. I look forward to helping him campaign for his strong record and contrast it with the current administration's."
"I especially look forward to helping President Trump and the Republican Party win a larger share of Hispanic, young voters, and voters across our cities and urban centers," he added.
Suarez, the first candidate to drop out of the Republican presidential primary in August 2023, had previously supported Hillary Clinton in 2016, former Democrat gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum in 2018, and Joe Biden in 2020.
The endorsement comes as Trump continues to dominate Biden in general election polling and holds a 50-point lead over the last remaining Republican challenger, Nikki Haley (R-SC). Trump currently dominates Biden in the Real Clear Politics polling average by two points nationally. The 45th president also handily defeats Biden in every swing state.
