Earlier this month, a church in Simpsonville, South Carolina, announced that it had baptized a stunning 141 people in just one day. Baptisms at the church, which is officially named First Baptist Church of Simpsonville, would routinely get around 30 to 40 baptisms after its one-month evangelist teaching series. However, it would seem that nearly quadruple the normal number were profoundly impacted by God's word.
The mass baptism was unlike any other in the church's history, with Senior Pastor Wayne Bray of the Multisite Upstate Church explaining that he had never seen anything like what happened last Sunday, according to The Baptist Press. "We have never seen anything like this in our church. To think that 141 people followed the Lord in baptism is truly unimaginable for me. I feel so blessed to be the pastor of Upstate Church," he said.
"Our hope was to have someone scheduled for baptism in every service on every campus. By Friday, Dec. 1, we already had 86 baptisms scheduled across all our campuses," the pastor continued, referencing the six sites across the local area. "This was overwhelming, but it gave us even more confidence to preach the Gospel on Sunday, expecting the Holy Spirit to move." Bray would go on to comment on social media that he believes "God is just getting started."
The senior pastor explained that his church's congregation has grown tremendously in the past few years, from 4,500 in 2014 to over 7,000 in 2023. "But God has certainly been doing something special these past few years. We've baptized 400 new believers since the beginning of 2022."
The church is expected to engage the 141 new believers in a discipleship program that is meant to guide them spiritually in order to make a church of disciples. "We've been saying this often. We don't just want to be a church that makes disciples. We want to be a church full of disciple-makers. That is our heart, and we believe that is what God is doing at Upstate Church. God's timing is always perfect, but sometimes it's more obvious to us. This is one of those times when it's easy to see His hand at work," Bray told The Baptist Press. "Our church has never been more prepared to disciple these new believers."
The church shared footage of the 141 people who were baptized, all of whom wore shirts with the words "Raised to Life" emblazoned on the front, as reported by Breitbart.
