GOP Rep. Kat Cammack To Introduce Bill Banning Foreign Flags From Congress - 'Infuriated Me'

On Saturday, Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL) revealed that she is drafting legislation to prohibit foreign flags flying in the United States Congress. The move came after the House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed $60 billion in aid to Ukraine, which saw Democrats and some Republicans waving the blue and yellow flag of the wartorn country.

"Watching American representatives pass out & wave Ukrainian flags in the United States House of Representatives chamber infuriated me. As we speak, my team is drafting legislation that will prohibit the display of foreign nations' flags on the House floor," Cammack wrote. "If there is one room in our country that should only have the American flag present, it is this room."

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who has received significant pushback for his decision to put the foreign aid package on the floor for a vote, said that the Democrats' decision to celebrate by waving a foreign nation's flag was against the rules of the House. "It is in violation of decorum to wave flags on the floor," the speaker said. "These are not normal times here in the House or around the world, as we all know. And we saw a disturbance here on the House floor just a bit ago. I just want to say simply what I think most people around the country understand and agree, we should only wave one flag on the House floor. And I think we know which flag that is."

During the vote, several Republican lawmakers like Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Lauren Boebert (R-CO) booed their colleagues for waving the foreign flag. "House Democrats are waiving Ukraine flags on the House floor as members of Congress vote to send nearly $61 billion more to Ukraine," Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) wrote about the vote. "Disgusting." Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) also slammed her Democrat colleagues, telling them on the floor to "put those damn flags away."

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) also criticized Democrats for flying the flags, emphasizing that taxpayer dollars are going to secure Ukraine's border rather than the US-Mexico border. "Ukrainian flags fly in the chamber of the UNITED STATES House of Representatives as they vote to send more of your hard-earned money to a corrupt foreign regime. And just like that, they shout 'UKRAINE! UKRAINE!' while happily working to secure Ukraine's borders, not ours."

The $60 billion foreign aid package for Ukraine passed with 311 lawmakers in favor and 112 against. Among Republicans, Johnson was unable to get a majority of his caucus to support the package, with 112 voting against it and only 101 supporting the legislation.
