GRAPHIC VIDEO: Internet Outraged After Ex-NHL Player Dies After Having Neck Slashed - 'Never Seen Anything Like This'

Over the weekend, former Pittsburgh Penguin forward Adam Johnson tragically died after being struck in the neck by Nottingham Panthers player Matt Petgrave during an ice hockey game in the United Kingdom. The clip showing the tragedy, which has gone viral on social media, has stirred considerable controversy, with many claiming that the hit was intentional on Petgrave's part.

"I've played hockey my whole life, I've NEVER seen anything even remotely close to this sick and gruesome," wrote the X/Twitter account Aesthetica. "At this point, Petgrave has not been arrested and has yet to face any consequences. Meanwhile the disgusting mainstream press is calling this a "freak accident". I can assure you there is no possible way this was an accident. Your body doesn't move like this on the ice, this was an attempted side kick to the throat that resulted in a man's death."

"The guy who cut the players throat is known to be a dirty player," Robby Starbuck wrote along with a article screenshot showing that Petgrave has a history of unsportmanship. "He had the most penalty minutes last year. Horrific."

"This should be manslaughter at the minimum," Ian Miles Cheong wrote. "Matt Petgrave clearly knew what he was doing."

"No words. Never seen anything like this in hockey in my life," wrote Texas GOP Chair Matt Rinaldi. "The video shows a clear and intentional attempt to injure with a skate. Petgrave should be charged with second degree murder, manslaughter at a minimum."

According to Fox News, Johnson's girlfriend took to social media to post a heartwarming tribute, writing, "My sweet angel, I'll miss you forever and love you always."

"The Nottingham Panthers are truly devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident at the game in Sheffield last night," the Panthers wrote in a post on Sunday. "The Panthers would like to send our thoughts and condolences to Adam's family, his partner, and all his friends at this extremely difficult time. Everyone at the club, including players, staff, management and ownership, are heartbroken at the news of Adam's passing."

South Yorkshire Police took to the stadium following the incident to begin their investigation. "Our officers remain at the scene carrying out inquiries and our investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident remain ongoing," the police said in a statement. "We would encourage the public to avoid speculation regarding the incident while we continue our inquiries."

Police are currently investigating the incident. Charges have not been brought against Petgrave at the time of this report.
