On Friday, the National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), the world's largest organization of police officers, officially endorsed 45th President Donald Trump in the 2024 race. The endorsement comes ahead of Trump's visit to North Carolina to address a meeting of the FOP to rally support in the critical swing state. The FOP, with its 373,000 members, endorsed Trump in 2020.
"Public safety and border security will be important issues in the last months of this campaign," National President of the Fraternal Order of Police Patrick Yoes stated. "Our members carefully considered the candidates' positions on the issues and there was no doubt - zero doubt - as to who they want as our President for the next four years: Donald J. Trump."
The endorsement from the law enforcement organization will allow Trump to showcase his support from those in law enforcement when his opponent Vice President Kamala Harris, a former prosecutor, attempts to use her legal background to contrast herself with Trump after he was convicted of 34 felony charges for falsifying business records in New York.
"During his term, President Trump made it clear he supported law enforcement and border security," Yoes explained. "In the summer of 2020, he stood with us when very few would. With his help, we defeated the 'defund the police' movement, and, finally, we are seeing crime rates decrease. If we want to maintain these lower crime rates, we must re-elect Donald Trump."
The National FOP leadership met with President Trump earlier this year, but the Harris-Walz campaign refused to hold similar meetings. Instead, it sent the organization a letter describing some of its positions on criminal justice and police labor issues. "This information was provided to the more than 377,000 members of the FOP so they could make their own decision in the election," the organization's letter reads.
"The National FOP endorsed Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020. He led our nation through some very tough times," the organization's president said. "He provided our nation with strong, effective leadership during his first term, and now that he is seeking election to a second term, we intend to help him win it."
The Harris campaign has attempted to counter the FOP's endorsement and Trump's visit to North Carolina by organizing a call with current and former law enforcement officials, including former Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn, to condemn the former president. "He put my life and the lives of my fellow Capitol Police officers in danger," Dunn said about Trump's actions on January 6, according to The Associated Press.
While Vice President Harris can try to convince the American people that Trump is a danger to the legal system and to law enforcement personnel, it seems like the actual men and women in blue have a different perspective on the 45th president. The National Fraternal Order of Police's endorsement of President Trump is a testament to his record of standing with the police when many on the Democratic side fought to defund them.
