“The View” co-hosts have appeared to lose hope Thursday for President Joe Biden’s reelection chances as an increasing number of Democrats have called for him to step down.
Co-host Joy Behar said Biden’s recent media appearances following the June 27 debate have not eased the minds of voters regarding concerns about his age and mental fitness for a second term. She predicted he would drop out of the race as a growing number of Democrats have publicly come out against his reelection bid.
“So depressing, the whole thing,” Behar said. “You know, I think that he’s gonna drop out now. That’s my feeling. I don’t have any information. But when Pelosi gets into this, and Schumer, and Schiff, and Jeffries and they all say it’s time to go. You know, the COVID in a way is like a good way for him to get out because he needs this time to show how strong he is and now he’s sick. Time is very, very short now. So I don’t know what’s gonna happen, but I wouldn’t put it past them to just say ‘look, Joe, we can’t.'”
Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin also agreed Biden would drop out to protect the “stakes of the election.” She argued a new nominee could “energize” more Democratic and independent voters to travel to the polls on election day and ultimately defeat former President Donald Trump.
“We’ve always said this is between Biden and the couch. It’s not that Donald Trump is so strong… Donald Trump actually has massive vulnerabilities. It’s been Biden’s weakness that’s allowed Trump to surge,” Griffin said.
Co-host Sunny Hostin criticized the alleged leaked conversations between Biden and Democrats urging him to pass the baton, saying his withdrawal is ultimately his decision to make. Co-host Sara Haines said Biden’s recent appearances are “concerning” ahead of the election.
At least twenty congressional Democrats have urged Biden to step aside in reaction to his disastrous debate performance, causing many to doubt his ability to defeat Trump. Democratic California Rep. Adam Schiff publicly came out against Biden’s reelection campaign during a Wednesday interview with The LA Times, while former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has dodged questions on whether Biden should remain in the race.
Several polls have shown that a majority of voters do not think the president can serve a second term due to his age and mental acuity. An AP/NORC poll released Wednesday found 65% of Democrats believe Biden should drop out of the race and select a different nominee.
Biden conducted a July 11 press conference and has done numerous sit-down interviews in an attempt to prove he is still mentally capable for the Oval Office, where he noticeably continues to make several gaffes and speak with a raspy voice.
