HUMILIATING: Watch Bernie Sanders Stumble On Difference Between Equality and Equity

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), an avowed democratic socialist and Democratic presidential primary candidate in 2016 and 2020, was on HBO’s political talk show ‘Real Time with Bill Maher’ on Friday. Mr. Maher, a liberal political satirist and commentator, pressed the 81-year-old Senator to explain the difference between equality and equity. Mr. Sanders, however, admitted he didn’t know what the difference between the two was before saying that he would side with equality over equity.

The viral exchange between the talk show host and the politician started with Mr. Maher rightly noting that “this word ‘equity’ has come into the language in the last few years and before that, we didn’t hear that a lot. I think a lot of people hear ‘equity’ and they hear ‘equality’ – like it is the same word. It is not the same word and not the same concept.” He then pivots to Senator Sanders when he asks,”[s]o, how would you differentiate between ‘equity’ and ‘equality’?”

The Senator of the Green Mountain State confusingly mused, “Well ‘equality’ we talk about- I don’t know the answer to that is.” After this admission of ignorance, the aged Senator pondered, “Come to think of it ‘equality’ is equality of opportunity. We live in a society where we want all people to have- whether color your skin…” At this point, Mr. Maher interrupted Senator Sander’s train of thought by asking “‘Equity’ I think is more guarantee of outcome, is it not?”

The senator nodded and said, “Yeah I think so. I think that is so.” Mr. Maher then asked, “Okay which side do you come down on?” To wit, Mr. Sanders then replied, “Equality.”

Such befuddlement over the two terms is understandable given that most people have traditionally conflated the two terms. Yet, modern political discourse has separated the two terms. As James Lindsay’s, mathematician and author on Critical Race Theory and Postmodernism, website New Discourses notes “Where equality means that citizen A and citizen B are treated equally, equity means “adjusting shares in order to make citizens A and B equal.” In that sense, equity is something like a kind of “social communism,” if we will—the intentional redistribution of shares, but not necessarily along lines of existing economic disparity but in order to adjust for and correct current and historical injustices…”

To put it in a simpler light, Dr. Lindsay tweeted that “‘Equity’ was never about equal outcomes. It’s always been about putting Leftists into power so they have the power to force their religious ideology onto everyone.”

Cenk Uygur, host of the progressive talk show “The Young Turks,” tried to defend Sanders and effectively strike at Mr. Maher and Dr. Lindsay’s commentaries about the two terms. Uygur tweeted that “I don’t even know if “equity” is a real thing that anyone outside of twelve leftists and the entire right-wing believe is real. The overwhelming majority of progressives agree with @BernieSanders (and me) that equality of opportunity is the right standard.”

Dr. Lindsay noted that “equity” is now used to advance such an agenda by leftist governments and is far from confined to just 12 leftists believing in this agenda. He simply tweeted “He’s [Uygur] not dumb; he’s just a liar” alongside a screenshot of a Biden executive order advancing racial equity.

This order being evidence that equity as a distinct concept which this government seeks to actively promote and advance.
