On Friday, House Republican leadership announced the upcoming contempt of Congress vote against President Joe Biden's son Hunter. The announcement of the contempt vote comes after Hunter Biden and his attorneys made a last-ditch effort to try to get out of the contempt vote, telling House GOP investigators that he would comply with a subpoena if the House Oversight Committee reissued a deposition or hearing request.
Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) revealed that the vote will take place next week, writing on X/Twitter, "Next week the House will vote to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress for repeatedly defying subpoenas. Enough of his stunts. He doesn't get to play by a different set of rules. He's not above the law."
The House Oversight Committee, led by Chairman James Comer (R-KY), voted to advance a vote to the House floor on contempt of Congress charges against Hunter earlier this week. During the hearing to discuss the vote's advancement, Hunter showed up at Capitol Hill in a surprise appearance. Hunter and his entourage entered the hearing room and sat in the audience for the beginning of the hearing, where Chairman Comer explained Hunter's wrongdoing. "Our investigation has produced significant evidence suggesting President Biden knew of, participated in, and benefited from his family cashing in on the Biden name," Comer said, per Fox News. "We planned to question Hunter Biden about this record of evidence during our deposition, but he blatantly defied two lawful subpoenas."
"Hunter Biden's willful refusal to comply with the committees' subpoenas is a criminal act" that "constitutes contempt of Congress and warrants referral to the appropriate United States Attorney's Office for prosecution as prescribed by law," he continued. "We will not provide Hunter Biden with special treatment because of his last name. All Americans must be treated equally under the law. And that includes the Bidens." Hunter would later leave the hearing after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) began her statement.
Following his shocking appearance in Congress, Hunter directed his lawyer, Abbe Lowell, to send a letter to the committee informing them that he would comply if a subpoena was reissued, arguing that the initial subpoenas were "legally invalid" given that they were issued before the formalization of the impeachment inquiry. "If you issue a new proper subpoena, now that there is a duly authorized impeachment inquiry, Mr. Biden will comply for a hearing or deposition," Lowell wrote, per Fox News. "We will accept such a subpoena on Mr. Biden's behalf."
Hunter Biden knowingly defied a congressional subpoena and should face consequences for doing so. Democrats should join with Republicans in holding the president's son accountable next week for his blatant disregard of congressional authority. He is not above the law, even if he is the son of the most powerful man in the world.
