Illegal Migrants Attempt To Hijack School Bus Carrying Students In California - 'Could Have Been In Real Danger'

Earlier this week, a group of migrants, on two separate occasions, in San Diego, California, attempted to board a school bus carrying children as it was en route to Oak Grove Middle School and a local elementary school on Highway 94. The two incidents have sparked outrage from concerned parents, and the San Diego Sheriff's Office has launched an investigation into them.

The first incident occurred on Tuesday when three migrants attempted to stop a bus when they walked in the middle of Highway 94, forcing the bus driver to swerve around the group of men. The second incident, which took place on Wednesday on the same route, saw 20 men, all with backpacks, attempt to board the school bus as the schoolchildren got off following the conclusion of the school day.

One of the parents, Nicole Cardinale, whose eight-year-old son was on the bus, explained that the incident was "really scary" and that her son was "confused" by the attempted hijacking. "Your initial shock is you're helpless," she said, adding that her son stated, "These adults—they weren't kids—had backpacks on, and they were trying to get on our bus… He said there were a lot of them."

"If those 20 people would have gotten onto the bus and tried to take over the bus, these kids and the bus driver could have been in real danger," she added, per Fox 5. Another parent, Jeremy Adams, expressed concern about not knowing the background or criminal history of the migrants. "We don't know who these people are," he said. "We don't know if they have any criminal history or what their background is."

In response to the incident, Jamul-Dulzura Union School District Superintendent Liz Bystedt notified the school district's parents and ordered bus drivers to skip over stops with migrants nearby. "Please stay [vigilant], and if the bus drives by, please follow the bus to pick up your child at the next stop," she wrote in a letter to parents.

In addition to notifying parents, Bystedt made sure that the California Highway Patrol, Border Patrol, and San Diego County Sheriff's Office were informed of the two incidents. "We are conducting a follow-up investigation to determine if a criminal act has occurred, the Sheriff's Office takes issue regarding student safety very seriously and are working with the school district in order to keep the students and our community safe," the San Diego Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
