‘Immediately Canceled My New York Times Subscription’: Radical Transgender Activists Meltdown Over Pamela Paul New York Times Op-Ed on J.K. Rowling

On Thursday, the New York Times published a piece by Pamela Paul titled “In Defense of J.K. Rowling.” Since its publication, the New York Times has fallen under attack by trans activists who have deemed the publication of such an article as offensive and dangerous.

J.K. Rowling, the author of the “Harry Potter” series, has been maligned as a transphobe by radical progressives because of statements that she has made against the transgender movement and in defense of women.

“Men defining what a woman is, what women should and shouldn’t fear, what women should and shouldn’t say, what rights women should be fine with giving up, and, of course, what constitutes ‘real’ misogyny: get a bloody mirror,” Rowling has as a pinned message on her Twitter account. “That’s real misogyny, looking right back at you.”

In response to the repeated backlash that Rowling has faced for her comments, Pamela Paul, an opinion columnist at the New York Times, published an op-ed in defense of the acclaimed writer.

“This campaign against Rowling is as dangerous as it is absurd. The brutal stabbing of Salman Rushdie last summer is a forceful reminder of what can happen when writers are demonized. And in Rowling’s case, the characterization of her as a transphobe doesn’t square with her actual views.”

Paul then went on to explain why Rowling is perceived as a transphobe by those of the progressive left: “The answer is straightforward: Because she has asserted the right to spaces for biological women only, such as domestic abuse shelters and sex-segregated prisons.”

“Because she has insisted that when it comes to determining a person’s legal gender status, self-declared gender identity is insufficient. Because she has expressed skepticism about phrases like “people who menstruate” in reference to biological women,” the Times writer continued. “Because she has defended herself and, far more important, supported others, including detransitioners and feminist scholars, who have come under attack from trans activists. And because she followed on Twitter and praised some of the work of Magdalen Berns, a lesbian feminist who had made incendiary comments about transgender people.”

“But nothing Rowling has said qualifies as transphobic,” Paul explained. “She is not disputing the existence of gender dysphoria. She has never voiced opposition to allowing people to transition under evidence-based therapeutic and medical care. She is not denying transgender people equal pay or housing. There is no evidence that she is putting trans people “in danger,” as has been claimed, nor is she denying their right to exist.”

In response to Paul’s assertions, the radical, illiberal left deemed her unfit to write for the New York Times and demanded that she be fired for expressing her opinion.

“We’ve had enough. We’ve joined over 100 organizations and leaders to demand that [the New York Times] stop printing inaccurate and harmful misinformation about transgender people and issues,” wrote the LGBTQ advocacy organization GLADD on Twitter. “Today we are outside of the Times building to send a clear message.”

“Immediately canceled my New York Times subscription today. Stop giving Pamela Paul a platform to defend people like JKR and DeSantis. Focus on the trans people who are dying,” wrote LGBTQ author Phil Stamper. “What a joke, [New York Times]. You know what you’re doing, enjoy your rage clicks.”

“Hundreds of New York Times contributors and readers: We’re concerned that the anti-trans bias in your paper could have devastating effects, both on individuals and society as a whole,” wrote writer Aubrey Hirsch with an attached image of the opinion piece.

As the New York Times takes a courageous stand in defense of the “Harry Potter” author, the reaction from the left once again showcases that freedom of speech is not something they are interested in. Paul has every right to express her opinion and calls for her removal as a writer at the Times should be a sign to everyone that radical progressives’ number one priority is to silence those who disagree with them.
