'Illegal, Unethical, and Profoundly Unjust': Texans Come Out In Droves Against Attorney General Ken Paxton's Impeachment As Trial Heads To Senate

Texas's Attorney General Ken Paxton's (R-TX) impeachment trial is scheduled to happen before the start of September, according to Just the News. The attorney general, seen by many as a rising conservative star and dubbed the man behind the "legal graveyard for Biden's policies", was impeached by the Republican-controlled state House in a vote of 121-23 on Saturday over accusations that he participated in bribery schemes and unlawful conduct. As per Texan law, Paxton is suspended from office until the 31-member Texan Senate decides the case.

Paxton's wife, who is a state senator, may be a juror in his case. The attorney general has maintained his innocence in the whole affair and released a statement denouncing the impeachment as an "outrageous...plot against me [that] was never meant to be fair or just. It was a politically motivated sham from the beginning. My office made every effort to present evidence, testimony and irrefutable facts that would have disproven the countless false statements and outright lies advanced by Speaker Dade Phelan and the Johnson panel he appointed. Unfortunately, they refused to consider anything that would interfere with their desired result. They disregarded the law, ignored the facts, and demonstrated contempt for Texas voters."

He further called the House impeachment "illegal, unethical, and profoundly unjust" in its refusal to consider any evidence of innocence and wrote that he expected that the Texas Senate would quickly resolve the issue and do so in a manner that was "fair and just." Former president Donald Trump also defended Mr. Paxton and wrote that his impeachment was "a very unfair process that should not be allowed to happen or proceed" and called this an example of election interference.

Texan House Representative Matt Schaefer (R) denounced the impeachment as a violation of basic rules of evidence. In his detailed tweet on that matter, Mr. Schaefer noted that the investigation itself over Paxton occurred "outside the knowledge of rank and file members of the Texas House. To my knowledge not a single member of the Texas House has interviewed, or directed questions to a single witness, and that includes members of the General Investigating Committee."

"All interviews were conducted by hired staff. Nor have any transcripts of interviews with witnesses conducted by committee staff been provided to the members of the full House. Nor have members been provided with substantiating documents," he added. "To be clear, the full Texas House has not heard any testimony from witnesses, nor have we been provided transcripts of such testimony. As I write this, I cannot determine whether those witnesses were under oath when they were interviewed by staff."

Texan House Representative Nate Schatzline (R), one of those who voted nay to the impeachment, similarly noted in his press release, "I have many fundamental issues with the process of the potential impeachment of Attorney General Ken Paxton. I have reviewed the footage of the General Investigating Committee hearing, read and taken notes on the transcript, and reviewed all documents that I've been provided. The documents we have been provided do not contain the evidence that's discussed in the hearing."

The Texan Speaker of the House who is accused of orchestrating the impeachment, Dade Phelan (R), was called by Ken Paxton a few days before the impeachment vote to resign for allegedly drunken conduct when presiding over the House floor.
