On Wednesday, leading Republican presidential candidate and 45th President Donald Trump wrote an op-ed appealing to the millions of young Americans who have become disenchanted with President Joe Biden's failing policies that have made them poorer, less able to afford basic necessities, and unable to obtain the American dream of a family and a house of their own.
Trump opened the op-ed by explaining that young Americans are leaving the elderly 81-year-old Biden for Trump in numbers not seen for generations, with a recent NBC News poll showing Trump besting Biden 46 percent to 42 percent amongst voters 18 to 34. Trump posits that the dramatic shift is largely the result of Biden's failing economic policies in contrast to Trump's booming economy from 2017 to 2019.
Trump explained that while annual incomes were rising under his administration and gas and inflation were at relative lows, the exact opposite was happening under Biden. "[F]or the past three years, young people have borne the heavy costs of the failed Biden agenda: crippling inflation, soaring prices, skyrocketing interest rates, unaffordable housing, and escalating crime," he wrote. "Over the course of the Biden administration, real incomes have gone down by $7,400 per family. Gas prices reached as high as $7 a gallon in some places. Cumulative inflation is 18 percent. And mortgage rates are pushing a brutal seven percent—making home ownership out of reach for countless young Americans."
"When I was in office, the 30-year mortgage rate reached a record low of 2.65 percent—and the median-income American family could afford a mortgage. Yet thanks to Biden's disastrous economy, interest rates have skyrocketed, making home-ownership out of reach for too many Americans, especially young Americans who in previous generations would be looking to start a family. As a result, historically high numbers of young people are delaying marriage and children," the leading Republican candidate explained. "According to a recent study, three quarters of Gen Z and Millennial couples believe it's too expensive to get married today. A 2022 study found that financial concerns are the number one reason why Americans are dropping out of school."
The 45th president went on to explain that young people are putting off getting married and starting families thanks to the lack of affordability currently plaguing American society. As previously reported by the DC Enquirer, inflation has led to a 17 percent increase in prices since Biden took office, while hourly pay has only increased 13.6 percent. The majority of the spending increases for the American family have come from food, transportation, housing, and energy as low and middle-class Americans continue to live paycheck to paycheck, which is most starkly demonstrated by the fact that credit card debt is at its highest rate ever at over $930 billion. The financial situation for American families has become so perilous that the average increase in expenses since Biden's inauguration has reached an average of $11,434 more to maintain the same standard of living as 2021.
"Instead of helping our young people confidently begin their lives, careers, and families, Joe Biden is crushing their dreams with debt, taxes, and inflation, and paving the way for a future of anger and despair," Trump explained, citing the astonishing average price for a new car at nearly $50,000 as well as the average car payment reaching nearly $750 a month. "Under Joe Biden, we are a nation in decline and rapidly losing the American Dream."
Trump then went on to explain the rising crime in big cities, the lack of home affordability for young families, and the drastic impact that drug abuse and addiction are having on America's youth. You can read Trump's full op-ed here.
