'It's A Scam Trial': Trump Says Judge In New York Case 'Prohibited' Him From Attending Son's High School Graduation

On Monday, presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump told reporters that the judge presiding over the hush money trail in Manhattan brought by District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D), Justice Juan Merchan, may not allow him to attend his son Barron's high school graduation on May 17. Merchan made it clear to Trump that if he missed a court date without his permission, he would be arrested and sent to jail.

"[Barron's] a great student and he's very proud of the fact he did so well and was looking forward for years to having his graduation with his mother and father there, and it looks like the judge isn't going to allow me to escape this scam. It's a scam trial," Trump said outside the courtroom. "We've got a real problem with this judge and a real problem with a lot of things having to do with this trial." Reportedly, Judge Merchan did not say outright that Trump was barred from attending the graduation but instead said that he may adjourn court if the proceedings remained on schedule.

Trump also revealed that Judge Merchan would not allow him to attend the upcoming Supreme Court arguments on whether or not he would be granted presidential immunity in the 2020 election case brought by special counsel Jack Smith. "He won't allow me to leave here for a half a day to go to D.C. and go before the United States Supreme Court, because he thinks he's superior," the 45th president told reporters.

Trump, who will likely be confined to a courtroom nearly every weekday for the next few months, took to Truth Social later in the day to slam Merchan for forcing him to sit for the proceedings in his criminal trial amid an ongoing presidential campaign. "In Addition to being prohibited from attending my son Barron's High School Graduation, I have just learned that the highly biased Judge in the Soros' appointed' D.A. Alvin Bragg's Witch Hunt Case, will not allow me to attend the historic PRESIDENTIAL IMMUNITY argument in front of The United States Supreme Court, on Thursday, April 25th (next week!)," Trump wrote. "This shows such great disdain and disrespect for our Nation's Highest Court, especially for a topic so important as Presidential Immunity, without which our Country would never be the same!"

Trump's first day in court was highlighted by a number of procedural motions and the beginning of jury selection. The jury selection process, where lawyers from both sides will ask hundreds of prospective jurors for their opinion of one of the most famous men in the world, will likely take weeks. The lawyers will ask each potential juror many questions to determine their underlying perceptions of Trump and to pick an impartial jury. So far, over 50 jurors have been dismissed from the case. Following the initial selections, lawyers from each side can cut ten jurors from the pool and ultimately decide who will be the final 12 to judge the case.
